Health and Fitness Professionals Annual Lecture: In Honour of Gord Sleivert: Exercise Recovery: Mechanisms, Technology and Interventions
9:00 – 10:15 am ADT
Point Sainte-Anne A+B
In exercise and sports competition, recovery from the associated stress is paramount for subsequent training or competition. The proverbial chase for understanding the processes as well as interventions to enhance this phenomenon has been the goal of research for over a half century. It has become well known that recovery is highly dependent upon the mechanisms that create a highly specific ”fingerprint” of the ”stressor” involving its disruption of structural and bioenergetic elements in the human organism. From neurological to morphological aspects, exercise and competitive stress presents a wide array of differential effects that can vary due to gender, training level, and genetics. Interventions including, training progressions, behavioral changes, nutritional, mechanical and neurological approaches have been studied to illuminate strategies for enhancing the recovery processes. This has provided today’s world of sports and exercise scientists even greater complexity in examining how to use this array of recovery technologies or ”tools” when working with different populations of fitness enthusiasts and athletes. The use of multiple approaches and individualized needs have further complicated decision making procuresses. This lecture will take a look at this world of recovery physiology and some of the many decisions exercise and sports science professionals now have to consider when looking at this important area of practice in exercise and sports science.
Speakers:

Symposium: Out running neurodegeneration: exercise-induced adaptions in neurons, blood vessels and supporting cells in the brain
10:30 am – 12:00 pm ADT
Point Sainte-Anne B
A goal of this symposium is to inform CSEP members and conference delegates about recent research on the molecular mechanisms, and cellular and structural adaptations in the brain in response to exercise. We will cover unique topics that are generally of interest to our membership such as exercise induced factors, metabolism, neurogenesis, inflammation, vascular regulation and growth/morphology. Exercise interventions in humans and animals are known to have beneficial effects on brain plasticity and cognitive functions. Recent advances in exploring the mechanisms underlying these effects of exercise could be due exercise-induced molecules, enhanced neurogenesis, alterations in supporting cells/structures (microglia and perineuronal nets), and improvements in cerebrovascular brain health. Here, the purpose of this symposium is to shine light on recent discoveries examining how exercise improves brain health by regulating multiple systems (e.g. metabolic, inflammatory, vascular). The symposium will also provide insights into how these systems interact which is critical to understand the benefits of exercise on the brain. Our objectives are to cover topics that span from exercise induced factors, to inflammation, to neuroplasticity, and changes in cerebrovasculature with exercise training. Further, our speakers will discuss how these exercise induced adaptions work together to enhance cognitive outcomes.
Speakers:
- Chair: Rebecca MacPherson – The role of exercise induced factors in preventing neurodegenerative disease
- Dylan Olver – Going with the flow – Effect of HIIT on cerebrovascular and brain health
- Paula Duarte-Guterman – Sex differences in exercise induced brain remodelling
Panel Diversity Statement:
Our panel includes three featured speakers who are up-and-coming early/mid career investigators that reflect the diversity of CSEP membership and more broadly, Canada. Our speakers range in career stage, sex, and background. Together, Drs. MacPherson, Duarte-Guterman, and Olver will provide an update on the latest hot topics in the cellular basis for brain plasticity. From the effects of exercise induced factors on neuronal metabolic signaling (MacPherson), to the effects of exercise on neurons, microglia, and perineuronal nets across sexes (Duarte-Guterman), and finally the benefits of exercise to brain vasculature and structure (Olver) – these three diverse researchers provide a comprehensive look at how exercise benefits the brain. Further, each speaker will highlight the diverse effects of exercise on the brain in terms of how age and sex may alter the outcomes.

Symposium: Exercise during Pregnancy: Practical Considerations
1:30 – 3:00 pm ADT
Point Sainte-Anne B
The Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada/Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology 2019 Canadian Guideline for Physical Activity throughout Pregnancy provided evidence-based recommendations for physical activity to promote maternal, fetal and neonatal health. The 2019 Guideline was based on 12 systematic reviews demonstrating the safety, and clinically meaningful prevention of pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, associated with regular practice of prenatal physical activity. As a result, this body of work redefined our view of prenatal physical activity from a recommended behavior to a prescription to improve the health of pregnant women and their children. The purpose of this Forum is to provide attendees with the opportunity to ask questions pertaining to details of the Guideline, as well as practical considerations and applications of these recommendations. At the end of this session, participants will 1) be familiar with the six key recommendations from this Guideline; 2) understand important considerations when prescribing physical activity or working directly with pregnant women; and 3) have the opportunity to ask questions regarding the Guideline and associated systematic reviews, as well as practical applications and considerations for prenatal physical activity.

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S): Why Nutrition Periodization is Crucial to Performance
Symposium: Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) : Why Nutrition Periodization is Crucial to Performance
2:15 – 3:00 pm ADT
Point Sainte-Anne D
Exercise physiology and nutrition go hand-in-hand. A 2018 study on the knowledge of collegiate athletic trainers about Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) suggested that only ~33% of participants were aware of RED-S, which affects both biologically born males and females. As the study suggests ”Continuing education may encourage a more comprehensive approach to referral and screening”. Thus, proper knowledge regarding impact, risks, screening and nutrition periodization around training could help professionals in exercise physiology flag individuals who are at risk for performance deficits, as well as stress fractures, depression, impaired judgment & concentration.
